About Altitude Sickness and Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)

What is Altitude Sickness (AMS)?

Altitude sickness is a group of symptoms encountered in high altitude conditions.

These altitude illnesses are caused by the decreased atmospheric oxygen pressure at higher elevations.  Altitude sickness is also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) and Mountain Sickness.  You are likely to have some effect of the altitude, if you sleep at elevations of 8000 feet or above.

What are the symptoms of     Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)?

  • Severe headaches (hangover like)
  • Nausea
  • Sleeplessness
  • Weakness and Fatigue
  • Dizziness and Disorientation
  • Difficulty Breathing

Is AMS serious?

The mild form can be quite uncomfortable and often passes after 3-5 days.  Get help before you visit the mountains to assure your comfort and enjoyable stay. Severe cases may lead to High Altitude Pulmonary Edema or High Altitude Cerebral Edema and possibly death.

Who is affected by AMS?

Anyone can be affected. If you have had altitude sickness once you are likely to have it again.  Generally persons traveling from sea level locations are more affected.  Even the most physically fit persons can be affected. Persons with cardiac conditions, respiratory disease or illness should consult their physician before high altitude travel since these conditions may predispose them to AMS.

How long does AMS last?

Even the mild form can be quite uncomfortable and often pass after 3-5 days.  Comfortable acclimatization occurs in 3-4 weeks and persons may require 6 months or more to fully acclimatize.

Can AMS be prevented?

Various preventative methods are available.  The most predictable is the gradual ascent to altitude (sometimes days or weeks at progressively higher elevations prior to the final destination).

Can AMS be treated?

AMS can be treated with medications, oxygen, hyperbaric chambers, retreat to lower altitudes and the Altitude MouthPiece (AMP).

What are the complications of AMS treatment?

  • Drugs have side effects and may require doctor visits.
  • Oxygen chambers and CPAP devices are bulky and costly.
  • Your retreat to lower altitudes will defeat the purpose of the high altitude excursion.
  • Hospital and medical stays are costly and inconvenient.

How many people are affected by AMS & altitude sickness?

The potential market is the 30 million annual visitors to high altitude in the US and Canada. Almost 27 million or 90% of mountain travelers experience some form of altitude illness. From 8 -12 million (25-40%) will experience the more severe condition of Acute Mountain Sickness, AMS.  Worldwide it is reported that there over 50 million annual mountain visitors.

The US military has reported problems with Acute Mountain Sickness in Afghanistan.  At least 12% of Medivac evacuations are for acute mountain sickness.

Why is the AMP the preferred treatment option?

  • The AMP is a natural solution to breathing better at altitude.
  • The need for drugs and their side effects may be eliminated or reduced.
  • You are more likely to begin enjoying the mountain experience quickly since the acclimatization process may be accelerated and the side effects of Diamox (altitude Rx drug) in particular are avoided.
  • The AMP may eliminate the need for medical clinic visits or the use of bulky oxygen equipment.

How does the AMP affect athletic altitude performance?

  • Athletic performance at altitude is initially limited due to the reduced oxygen pressure. Even very fit athletes from sea level may encounter performance and breathing problems. The AMP can accelerate the altitude acclimatization process by improving sleep.
  • The AMP may improve actual performance through the “MORA” or “Pure Power Mouthguard” effect.
  • The AMP may improve breathing mechanics thereby improving physical efficiency.

Can the AMP help with snoring or sleep apnea?

The AMP is sold as a dental mouthpiece which functions in a way similar to snoring mouthpieces commonly available.  It is not intended to treat the serious medical condition of sleep apnea.  This mouthpiece may help snoring and if so you should consult with your dental or medical sleep specialist about the possible condition of sleep apnea.

What Models are offered?

The AMP comes in three styles.

AMP Alpine

  • For the casual traveler the over the counter AMP Alpine is offered in a “boil and bite” version.  The user fabricates the Alpine themselves by heating the mouthpiece in hot water then molding the device to fit the mouth.

AMP Alpine PRO

  • The serious athlete or highly susceptible altitude sickness traveler will want the AMP Alpine PRO.  The user makes their own dental impression using simple instructions then forwards the impressions to the AMP dental laboratory for a custom fitted AMP PRO mouthpiece The Alpine Pro is a more comfortable and durable appliance.

AMP Olympic

  • The AMP Olympic is dentist fabricated only. Contact us directly for a list of AMP certified dentist in your area.  BY using custom impressions and scientific bite registration the Olympic can offer a more permanent solution. Which AMP is right for me?

·         The AMP Alpine offers the casual altitude traveler an opportunity to evaluate the benefit of the AMP product line with a simple to use and economical option.

·         Once the benefit has been established the more frequent high altitude visitor may wish to use the custom laboratory fabricated Alpine PRO which offers a more durable, secure and comfortable fit.

·         The more serious Alpine athletes will want the AMP Olympic which allows adjustments for various activities.

Do I need a dentist to fit the AMP?

No.  The user can fit both Alpine models. The AMP Alpine is a simple to use “Boil and Bite” device and is intended to be fitted by the user.  The Alpine PRO can also be fitted by the user (or a dentist).  The AMP Olympic can be fitted only by an AMP certified dentist.

When should the AMP, be used?

To benefit AMS the AMP is designed to be used while sleeping. However, the AMP can be used any time of the day.

At what altitude should the AMP be used?

The most frequently elevation where altitude sickness is common is around 8000 feet although it can be seen in susceptible individuals at lower elevations such as 5000 feet (Denver).  The drowsiness seen in airplanes is partially caused by the pressurization in flight of 8000 feet. The low oxygen pressure at altitude causes a reduction in the physical performance capacity and endurance and the low oxygen pressure negatively affects the overall body physiology and can result in AMS and other potentially life threatening altitude illnesses.

How long do I need to use the AMP?

To treat AMS most individuals benefit from a 3-4 overnight usage. The athlete can use the AMP as long as there are breathing issues. This short term use avoids long term TMJ effects.

Can the AMP, be used with other altitude treatments?

Yes.  The AMP will enhance the performance of other altitude treatment modalities such as drugs or oxygen devices.  However, most people will benefit from the AMP without the use of additional medications or appliances. The physician at altitude may prescribe the use of the AMP to help with emergency altitude treatments.

How long will the AMP Alpine last?

The Alpine should be expected to last one full ski season with proper maintenance.

How to fit the AMP Alpine

The Alpine is a boil and Bite appliance easily fitted by the user while following detailed instructions.

How to fit the AMP Alpine PRO

The more comfortable and secure Alpine PRO is a custom fit laboratory fabricated device. The user can make their dental impressions from materials provided in the easy to use kit.  The impressions are sent to the AMP dental lab for fabrication and returned to the user. A dentist can also make the impression for the user. Detailed directions are included in each package.

What are the applications for the AMP?

Current and future AMP applications may include the following:

The AMP is intended improve breathing by positioning the mouth in such a way that more oxygen is available. As a result the AMP may help relieve the symptoms of altitude sickness and Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) while acting in a method partially similar to snoring mouthpieces when used during sleep.

The AMP may also improve performance by enhancing breathing mechanics and improving sleep.

The AMP may be used as a protective dental mouthpiece and may provide a reduction in concussion severity.

Athletic Performance may be improved through the “MORA Effect” similar to the Pure Power Mouthguard when the device is properly fitted.

The AMP can be used in conjunction with other treatments for Altitude sickness including oxygen, drugs, CPAP devices and hyperbaric devices. The AMP may be helpful in emergency medicine situations. The AMP may be used during the day in the PEEP breathing method to raise the oxygen blood saturation level.

The AMP may also be beneficial in the athletic training regimen of “train high live low”.

The extent of AMP uses may be broadened over time depending on ongoing scientific research. Currently the AMP is intended to be used as an aid to improve breathing functionality while being used temporarily in high altitude location.  The AMP usage should not be substituted for sound medical advice in emergency situations.
